Baseball & Softball Hitting Center Donated to New Bern High School

At the Together4Tanner Foundation, our mission has always been rooted in supporting student-athletes and strengthening the athletic community in New Bern, NC. That mission took a meaningful step forward in Spring 2017 – with the completion of a dedicated hitting center designed to provide a year-round training space for New Bern High School baseball and softball players.

The hitting center represents more than just a practice venue. It’s a space where young players can refine their skills, build confidence, and grow through sport. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, volunteers, and community partners, this facility now offers a safe, well-equipped environment where aspiring athletes can work on their game regardless of weather or season. This investment in local athletics reflects the Foundation’s continued commitment to enhancing opportunities that empower student-athletes to thrive both on and off the field.

To commemorate this important addition to our community’s athletic resources, we held a special naming ceremony honoring a pillar of New Bern baseball and Tanner’s high school coach, Coach Gary Smith. Coach Smith dedicated many years to coaching, mentoring young players like Tanner, and shaping the lives of student-athletes through his passion for the game and his commitment to character development. His influence extended well beyond wins and losses; he inspired countless players to pursue excellence, resilience, and teamwork.

The event brought together family, friends, former players, coaches, and community members who shared stories of Coach Smith’s enduring impact. Through laughter, memories, and heartfelt tributes, it was clear that his legacy lives on in the many athletes he coached and the broader community he helped shape. Naming the hitting center in his honor ensures that his contributions will continue to be recognized and felt by future generations of athletes.

We are proud of what this facility means for New Bern and grateful for everyone who helped make it a reality. As athletes begin to utilize the space and Coach Smith’s legacy is celebrated with every swing, we look forward to the continued positive impact this center will have on our student-athlete community.
